    Default Perch/Bream Jigs

Hey folks, I'm looking for a small skirt to put on a 1/64 or 1/32nd jighead with a #8 hook to catch catfish bait with (white perch and bream). Most of the crappie ones are too big for their small mouths so I miss a few too many bites for my liking when I'd rather be fishing for cats. I'm jigging shallow water around piers and grass beds.

I guess I can just tie up some feather jigs and rub a dab of scent on them, might be the easy answer!

You could always pick up a sabiki rig or two.

I have a few for the boat, but I'm looking for something to jig in a couple feet of water up to 7-9 when I don't have worms with me.

Tie some 1/32 using 1'' of the hackle tip and a piece of silver tinsel down each side of the jig around 1'' longer than the jig. A chenille body for adding sent if needed. Use a good saddle hackle to make a collar. These jigs have been good for gills and a medium brown has been the best color.

One thing we do is cut down a slider jig but almost any solid body jig will work, I've even used old bass worms cut or sliced to look like worms, (earthworms)
    If you don't get hung every-once-n-a-while you ain't jigg'n it right..:D

I got in the mood and tied these little guys up this morning. 1/48th oz #8 sickle hook.

They came out a touch long due to the oblong shaped head I think but I like them. Oughtta work fine. I'll rub some scent in, the feathers should hold it ok.

Those you tied look fantastic. When you say jigging in shallow water are you casting and just a slow steady retrieve like you do for crappie? I have a 2.5 year old boy and I think in about 3 more years I will be looking for ways to keep him on a bent rod so I'm always looking for panfish tips. I'm more of a striper fisherman than anything else so I am lurking around on this board always trying to learn a little more. Thanks.

Yep, cast out and let it sink and slowly swim it back. Sometimes they want it bumped or stopped a bit. For deeper water where you know the depth the fish are at you can do a slip or clip on cork and just slowly reel it back in or if by structure give it a few taps and let it settle. Gives you a bit more casting distance also.

Clip on spinner arms are another option.

These I'll be casting around dropoffs, grass beds, and vertically fishing them by pier pilings and boats. You can shoot them but I wouldn't recommend it for a kid that young.

Hard to beat a tub of red wigglers, a cork, and a long shank #8 hook for action for the little ones!

I was about to ask how a small clip on cork would do with those little jigs. Sounds like fun for him and Dad, thanks.
