I've never fooled with Stripers much til Tom turned me on this year. I love not having to fool with live bait. I'm sure we might have gotten a couple more here and there but feeling them hit a spoon or top water plug is way more fun.
I've also never seen such a prolonged bite. They've been hot all summer.

They will bite spoons all summer on Murray. Big difference this year is the depth. They are staying amazingly shallow! Last year we only found them from 60-100’ after June. This year I can’t find a fish deep. Once the early bite is over , I have not been able to stay on them. Last year we got them up until noon several times.

Someone posted on another thread that a weather phenomenon in June caused the thermocline to be much higher in the water than normal. 35' vs 50-60 feet. I have no idea how accurate that is but I guess it would explain why they are more shallow than normal.
One of my friends that lives on the lake said he rode down to the towers around 7PM last week to use up a few herring that survived from a morning trip. He caught 2 but said he sat there for about 30 minutes watching a family on a pontoon catch several with spoons jigged at 35' right at the towers. So over 100' deep and they were holding at 35. When I fished the towers a couple of years ago with my grandkids in the evening it was always 40-50 feet or more.

I guess i should have clarified a little better. Last year when i found them in 60-100', they were suspended from 25-45'. Rarely did i actually catch them deeper. But when i looked in water 45 or less , no fish to be found. Just the opposite this year. We did watch a boat with 4 guys fishing herring yesterday. They were catching them as fast as they could drop a bait. Fish are getting plenty of pressure so i guess the herring are always a sure thing. I did see 2 floaters this weekend. Not bad considering the number of boats though.
