    Default Xpress Boat

I am looking at an xpress HD16 boat with a 2013 40hp 2 stroke tohatsu on it and was wondering if anyone has experience with either of the brands. I have always had evinrudes and do not know much on the tohatsu. The boat is for sale in Piedmont and has a big crappie.com sticker on it so maybe the previous owner is on here and can give me some history on it. Thanks

My Dad has an Express 18 and absolutely loves it. He got it to fish tailraces for stripers but he liked it so much that he sold his larger bay boat and fishes that boat 100% of the time. It’s the quietest aluminum boat I’ve ever been in. It must have a lot of foam sprayed in. He has a 70HP Yamaha 4 stroke and it handles like a little sports car. Very fun little boat to drive. Jumps on plane and corners great. I think he tops out in the mid to low 30’s on speed.

I’ve never owned a Tohatsu but they are developing a very strong following in the super high end micro skiff market. Check out Chittum Skiffs to see what I’m talking about. Those tiny little flats boats sell for 50 to 70K and could have any motor you want but most are going with Tohatsu because of the weight to HP ratio. But it also tells me they are reliable too. They have to be in that market. Hal Chittum wouldn’t be putting them on his boats if they were not.

Tohatsu makes Mercury and Nissan outboards. The literature that came with mine said that the only difference between Tohatsu and Nissan are the decals. I have a four stroke 9.5 that has been flawless for ~ 10 years

I have a 2016 Tohatsu forty on my 1656 Saltmarsh and we love it. Their 20-50 hp four strokes are their bread and butter. You see a good many down in FLA on microskiffs. They are light weight for a fourstroke, and sip fuel, so you can make those long runs and not worry about fuel. I've got less than 100 hours on mine, but I know a few guys in Fla that have 750+ hours on their and they've never been in the shop except for routine maintenance.
As for the boat. I've duck hunted out of a 15' and it is built like a tank. Hope this helps.

I put a 2018 20 HP Tohatsu on my boat and it is a really impressive motor. As stated earlier they make all Mercurys up to around 60 up. Very reliable fuel injected 4 stroke motor.

How many will usually be in the boat?
40 may be small for 2 adults on a regular basis.
    Just an opinion

Imho you will like the performance of the two stroke tohatsu. I have had two of these motors and both were strong runners. I still use one on a 14 ft dw jon and it works great. Personally i think the 40 will be a nice match for a 16 footer.

You might be right. I was comparing it to a 40 on a 17' bass tracker.

It was mine. I traded it in for a new boat.

A lot of history with that boat. I didn’t want to get rid of it to be honest. I damn near cried when I let it go. I’ll tell you what who ever buys it will never catch the amount of fish out I put in that boat. Lol
