Default White Bass / White Perch pic.

Caught two right at the same time, both were about the same size so I decided to try to get a good picture for folks to compare the two. I'm sure there's a lot of relatively new fishermen that haven't saw many white bass. They have always been a favorite fish of mine. I've caught one two weeks in a row, maybe and hopefully there on the comeback. The main distinguishing feature is the White Bass has the noticeable stripes . This little White bass is still swimming, the Perch is not. I hope this helps someone distinguish between the two and remembering the days of just going out and fishing for the White Bass. There ferocious biters and fighters. I can still remember the very first white bass I caught back about 1980 in santee,I've been hooked since.SamName: IMG_1099.jpg

We used to drive down to the old boat ramp behind the dam at Cedar Creek and catch our limits in just a little while. We used 1/4 oz. green rubber tail jigs and they ate them up! They were a great fight on light tackle with 6lb. Test. I'm afraid that was 30-40 years ago. I haven't caught a White Bass in Wateree in probably 15 years. The White Perch won that war. Thanks for posting, it's good to know there are at least a few left.

Me too Thumper, back in those days you could take someone out in the boat with you and they' d think you were a professional fisherman. I mostly trolled plugs, like rattlin raps, and bayou boogies. My biggest wateree striper was caught while trolling for White Bass in the 90's in cedar creek.Do you remember all those anglers standing / wading the creek? We'd get after them in the summer months around singleton and Dutchman creeks schooling too.

I can relate to you post very well as a young kid tagging along with my brother. We used Bayou buggies with a jig tied to the back hook and catch them two at a time also. Good memories for sure!

    Thanks!

Thanks for the post and a good illustration of the difference between the two. I've never eaten the white perch, is it similar in flavor with the white bass?

Yes, and in my opinion, both are delicious!

We used to catch a ton of them in Wylie. We would troll white shysters until we found them, then we would fish the schools! And for you young guys, this was before the Lowrance XYXTWU 7000 that can find a minnow in 1200 ft. of water sideways!

We used to camp in Sparkleberry swamp every March and catch lots of White Bass on their spawning runs. Lots of fun in the 70s and 80s, then the perch took over. Our best lure was a 1/4 oz white jig head with green body. Mr. Pack had a bag of them in his store at the landing and it must have had 5000 jigs in it.

We use to catch then every March at the Saw Dust Pile landing. We never cranked the OB, we just put the trolling motor down and fished that pool. We used and I still have the Mepp's #2 Spinner with the Gold blade. Caught 100's of them over the years there. Good Memories.
