Good luck crappie_dan.
Hey guys I'm headed to santee this weekend for the first time catfishing. I'll be staying at Hills landing. I know very little about catfishing so any tips on what bait and where to look would be helpful. We'll have a pontoon setup with rod holders so we could anchor or drift. Thanks for any help

CD, we always used to go down to Santee to drift fish out in front of harry's fish camp which is at the upper end of the canal. We tightlined chicken livers and did alright catching cats averaging anywhere from a couple lbs up to 15 lbs or so. We never had a biog enough boat to get out in the lake but if youre fishing from a pontoon then I'd try going out of the lower end of the canal and doing some drift fishing. Guides used to always fish the deep holes above Harry's in the upper lake out in front of the dam just up from Harry's too. Just pay attention to the weather as a storm can get really dangerous on those wide open lakes. Have fun and please post a report about your trip after you get back.

Well not much to report. We had some boat issues Friday night that lead to not much fishing. Saturday night we stayed close to the canal in fear of a breakdown. Only managed 5 cats, 3 of which were in the 5-8lb range. Oh and it was HOTT!!

Sorry to hear the fishing wasnt hot for you guys. Cant say as I blame you for sticking close to the canal if you had boat problems though, as the lakes are BIG and a storm can sink ya out there. Did you guys try to anchor up or was you drift fishing baits for the fish you caught? Forgot to mention the "new" canal to fish in but if you had motor problems you wouldnt a tried riding that far anyways. Glad you caught some and hopefully you had fun even if the fish wasnt biting that well.
