Default in SC and going fishing with Uncle in Lake Murray....

how's the crappie bite? hitting the water on Tuesday before I return back to NY Weds.. Any reports?

My first time fishing this lake. I brought some lures with me (purchased from members here) so I'm not short in that department LOL. Anyways, what's good to start off with and depth to target?

    Thanks,

    V

Not much crappie activity being reported. Plenty of White Perch action if you get bored. If you use minnows in 30 FOW you probably will get them regardless of what you are fishing for. The only crappie catch I've heard of is on brush and structure in the rivers way up the lake. If you can find some brush piles you should pick up some on either jigs or minnows.
Always a chance to pick up some nice 15 to 18 inch Striped Bass right now and there is no size limit until the end of Sept. However you can not cull the Stripers, so keep the first 5 you catch. That size is good eating and we usually get a couple when perch or crappie fishing. Jigs or minnows with catch them also.
    Good luck.

    Thanks SeaRay!

I'll forward your info to my uncle. I was hoping to catch some crappie and brim as well.

The shell cracker bite may be picking up as it cools. I was planning to try them later in month and into November. Best way to target them and bream is to anchor off a rocky point in about 10 to 15 FOW and fan cast red worms and crawlers around the boat and let sit on bottom. Give each spot about 20 minutes and move if no bites. Look for clam shells on the anchor when you pull it in, as that is what draws the shell crackers.

FBM357, the crappie on Lake Murray are spotty right now from what I've seen and heard. The depth of water you should concentrate your efforts in really depends on the area of the lake yall will be fishing. Lake Murray is a big lake and up the rivers fish like a completely different body of water from down the lake IMO. If you are fishing mid-lake down (Dreher Island, Bear Creek, ect.) I would recommend targeting brush piles in 18-22 FOW with minnows. If you are planning on fishing up the lake and in the rivers I'd plan to do more single poling. Brush in any depth up the rivers will be holding fish and don't forget about docks and snags. Jigs should do the trick, but minnows won't hurt anything. I'd look shallow and deep up the rivers. I caught fish in 4-20 FOW a couple weeks ago and things should only be getting better with the falling temps.

Good luck in your search and let us know how yall do!

Thanks Countryboy & Crappie Buster! .. I've never fished Lake Murray (I'm a NYC fisherman) and my aunt & uncle live here in SC. I packed plenty lures (no rods, he has plenty). From what I gather from him, he hasn't been out this year! I also don't know how well he knows the lake (hope he's knowledgeable) .. Either way, I'm looking to enjoy myself (but definitely want to catch fish!.. LOL)

All I can say is "WOW"!! .. my first time ever on Lake Murray and what an awesome sight!

My uncle didn't make time seeking crappie but instead went to several of his favorite spots for ahellcrackers. I've only fished & caught them maybe 20+ years ago in a private lake in upstate NY. But the ones I caught yesterday nearly made them look like minnows in comparison! MUTANTS! .. LOL

Also caught several nice size catfish! . Had a great time despite the surrounding circumstances. Looking forward to visiting and fishing again! .. Even convinced my uncle to update his archaic electronics before the year is out ( Hummingbird with SI)

All fish were caught using worm in 20-25 FOW
