    Default North Tyger river crappie

Do any of you guys fish the north Tyger river below 221 and I26? If so have you ever caught any crappie? A buddy of mine has been catching smallmouth. I think I've caught everything but a crappie or a smallmouth. I was wondering if the two favored the same water conditions? Thanks for your help.

The North Tyger River is a cold water river and the North or Middle parts of the river above hwy 221 would be not likely to hold many crappie but below 221 is the Tyger River section and with warmer waters it should have crappie. With y'all catching bass it wouldn't surprise me that you are not catching crappie but if using some of the smaller baits you may start catching some. If you find some slack water you may want to fish it to see if it is holding crappie. Never fished the river nor seen many reports from it but then again the upper part of the river would be used for white water kayaking. I am intrigued about the river now after doing a little research and hope to find out more about the river.

If you catch some crappie in it please let us know. Is that part of the river fast running? We have a few members here that may have fished it since they live close to the river so hopefully they will let us know some good info about what species it holds. It does seem like this has been asked before here.

Just below me it is quit fast moving at normal flow and just plain truckin when it's up. It's real rocky with shoals and what not. They hold the tame the Tyger whitewater race here every year. I would think since smallmouth are caught it stands to reason there is a good possibility there is crappie hanging around somewhere. I will let you know if I'm lucky enough to catch any.
    Thanks,

Look behind big rocks or fallen trees, the crappie want fight the current, they will find a spot out of the current. There is some here crappie here in broad river, they stay out of the current.

Yes calm waters is the place to look if you can find some. I fish the Saluda River and finding any place the has slower water tends to be the best places for catching crappie. I hope you have some luck finding them in the Tyger.

Thanks for the help everybody. I belive I'll break out the minnows and jigs to try my luck. We finally got some rain this way so maybe that will perk everything up at the river. I haven't caught a desent catfish in the past couple of weeks.
    Thanks again,

Crappie don't like current so they will be holding in still water or down current of points, breaks and laydowns. If they are in the current they will be facing upstream. If you can find some deep cuts try covering them even if the water isn't real deep. When I'm fishing a running river I will fish with a marabou, hair or tube jig & slip float. I'll start 18'' deep and adjust from that depth. I do use the smallest float I can get away with. This may be the way you already fish for them, just some info of how I would fish the river.

Hope im posting this right. I'll give it a whirl. I got me some slip bobbers earlier. Think I'll try the maribou rig. I like the sound of your strategy. I had my catfish trap in behind a fallen tree when i caught the crappie in about 2 or 3 feet of water. Thanks a lot stump. You and all the rest of the guys have been a big help. Had to turn out the fish btw since it's illegal to trap game fish.
