If you are running 1/16, 1/32, or 1/48 ounce jigs at 0.7mph on the gps what depth do you think they are running? I am interested in seeing what everyone else thinks in reference to my opinion. Also, what speeds do you run the 1/16 oz jigs when trolling without any extra weight and what depth do you think they are running. This question could be two part for the back rods and then for the side rods.
using 6 lb test a 1/16 jig 50ft behind the boat at 0.7mph would be at 9ft ,1/32 jig 50ft behind the boat would be at 3ft,1/48 jig not sure never fish with them !!!
I normally run 1/16 jigs at 0.9mph to 1.0mph jig 50ft behind boat the jigs run 6 to 7 ft deep !

Lets just say the water depth is 10ft or deeper. I use 6lb test line on all reels trolling and 50ft or a little longer would be about the right length from the boat of the jig. I am looking for other peoples info on this. I have found that different people have some way different answers for some reason. I rarely use 1/48oz jigs but I do if they are extremely shallow in very shallow water.

I think at 0.7mph the 1/16oz could go as deep as 11 foot but I think they are normally running a little shallower than 10 foot with the back rods. My side rods are 12 footers, 14 footers, 16 footers and 18 footers and I try to have them running shallower as the rods get longer. I believe that my 18ft rod with a 1/16oz jig could be running about four foot with 25-30 foot of line out. When casting my side rods I always have 12 foot rod longer and work my way up with less line out as the rod gets longer. I think this also helps with tangles but lately I have done a lot of biting jigs off and retying.
I don't think the 1/16 are running as deep as y'all think they are. I use some 1/8 jigs at Greenwood in the fall and fish some flats that are 12' deep. With my jigs out 40 to 50' they never hit bottom and I feel they are running 10 to 11' foot deep using 6lb line and at a speed of .07, .08 when the wind hits. I know pulling a 1/16 at the same distance out I can fish a 6' flat at .07 without hitting bottom. I never add weight to my lines and only pull a 1/16 or a 1/8 jig. If I want to go deeper or shallower I speed up or slow down and use what ever jig I have tied on at the time.
Just my way of pulling and what I know my jigs are doing.

I'm no expert, but I think it also depends on jig body being used. Curly tail grubs seem to offer more resistance than say a hair jig. I've gotten where I just pull 1/16s all the time. I add a split shot to get them deeper if desired. I speed up the troll speed and not let them as far out if want to shallow up how they run. The shallowest water we usually pull is probably 8-10 feet. That's just what we do. If the fish are on the bank in the bushes/weeds we cast to them vs troll. But it seems some are just about always coming or going from the bank. Those are the ones longlining catches in the spring I believe.
Good question sometimes I have had problems bumping the bottom in 10 fow with 1/16 mainly using slider jigs with about 50ft of line out running .7 by the GPS what would the difference be on round heads vs the pointed heads I use pointed heads I wonder if that would have any bearing on my issue
There are too many variables to give a concrete answer....unless, you give all the variables to take into account. The variables are: type jig head (bullet/minnow runs deeper than round), size jig head (1/16,1/32,1/24 etc.), diameter of line: (#4, #6, etc.), length of line (30',40',50',60', 80', etc.), angle of rod (0degrees-straight out back, 90 degrees-straight out side...0 degrees runs deeper than 90 degrees etc.,body of jig (curly tail, slider, hair etc.), speed (.7,.8,.9,1.0) now, if I have remembered all of those we can take the guess work out. I think length of line is one area where people "guess"...and unless you are counting it out, you may be surprised. One day we were fishing Greenwood and I had a 12' rod that was about out of line...it was catching fish left & right. When I got home, I measured the amount of line it had out...75' to my surprise. So unless you know that....the formula is worthless. Angle of rods is another area that we fail to make adjustments during the day. Sometimes the back rods are catching more fish than the side rods or vice-versa...the depth is the answer. If the side rods are getting more bites, shallow up the back rods or vice-versa. I would suggest if you don't count out your line...to at least cast your jig on your lawn and measure the distance...then you'll have some idea how far back your jigs are.
