Turning the contrast DOWN? I hadn't heard that, but will give it a try and see what it looks like. I guess I'd presume that the fish will still show up or you wouldn't be suggesting it. And the 455 Khz will be fine even on those docks that sit in 30-40 feet of water? Obviously I'll try both the 455 and 800khz and see which seems to work best.

I have a bit of an update. Aside from the fact that I wasn't really as happy with the side scan as I thought I should be, the last several times out the unit was giving me fits. Either it wouldn't recognize the transducer at all or if it did, I'd have weird geometric shapes on the screen, a very soft bottom return, etc. etc.. I contacted the Lowrance tech after getting on the water and he walked me through his troubleshooting list and determined that the transducer is shot, so I just ordered a new transducer. I have my fingers crossed that this really WAS the issue and has been for for a long time and that after I get the new one installed that I'll be much happier. I'll feel obligated to post an update after I do so because I do appreciate everyone's help and want them to know that I've worked through the issues.
