No I haven't. I was given the opportunity to get on the water today so did more experimenting with trying different things. Humminbird said it could be the y cable so my plan is to do like you said and start with the right transducer since it's already in place and then swap. Today when the fuzziness started it was around 15 ft and got thicker the deeper I got. At around 25 feet the fuzz was so thick you could not tell fish from anything else. 8 to 10 feet the image looks nice except for a little propwash on the right side depending on my speed and tilt. I also ran with trolling motor only to be sure it wasn't an interference issue from the outboard but the issue remained until I came back shallow. In the image I posted, I was running with the side image down image and 2D sonar on one screen and things started getting fuzzy on the down image so I decided to go from Mega to 455, as soon as I press the check button the image clears up immediately where the mega was showing the fuzz and then the fuzz continues while on 455. The same issue happens if I'm on the down image only screen. Things seem quite clear around 8 feet but from 14 ft and deeper it gets fuzzier so you can't tell fish from anything else on that screen either. I have to decrease sensitivity and adjust contrast so much to clear up that nothing shows up. Too bad I don't know anyone around my area that we could do an on the water test. Same body of water, same settings and then swap units to see if things get better or worse. I've never owned a hummingbird unit before so I'm not familiar with how things should be but I know what this is doing is not right In regards to the long press button sounds as well as the screen flashing tells me that something is not right but hummingbird will not have me to send the unit/ transducers in for diagnostics.

On the 2d not showing thermocline, it would depend on how high his sensitivity was and whether he was using clear mode or max mode as well. I can see where it might show up on the DI and SI but not on the 2d.
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.
