How deep of water was the motor in? This is a really cool story. I would have cried if my motor came off and sank to the bottom of the lake...

It was in 12 to 14' water. All we can figure is while running wide open he accidentally hit the reverse leaver or it just wasn't tight enough on transom. He didn't have it bolted to the transom then but it is bolted now.

Had this happen to me. 14 foot boat with 9.9 Evinrude 2 stroke.Older motor but always ran like a champ. It was clamped on but was mounted like that for @ 3 years.

Was trying a lake not familiar with and went down a rather bad road to the launch. Evidently it had loosened the clamp mount. Anyway after 2 hours of fishing here and there. I figured to try a section of lake I was a little more familiar with. As I opened the throttle to full speed it literally jumped off the transom . It ran in gear until submerged enough to stall out.

I though it was going to rip my arm off before it stalled. Regardless of how strong you think you are. This was a bear of a task. Somehow I don't think my right arm has been the same since. When I arrived home after this. I pulled plugs and let dry for 24 hours under a heat lamp. Re-installed plugs fired it up. It ran just as before until I sold boat and motor.

If anyone thinks " I am not worried my motor has been clamped for years. ". Just figured my debacle might convince you to use bolts.
