    Default Livescope cone angle

Questions for Livescope owners. I see how effective this tool is for single pole fishing but what about spider rigging. If the transducer was mounted off the transom below boat pointing forward and let's say you were fishing 8 rods out the front. Say 14' rods out of a 18' boat, so say baits are 32' in front of transducer and distance from outside bait to outside bait say 33'. Figuring 2 outside poles at 14' + 14' + 5' of deck. I think I also read Rickie said that Livescope doesn't have a traditional 2d cone angle but wondering how many baits/rods could you see at a time without moving transducer? Hope this makes sense.

See Roy’s thread on distance. May be of some use to your question.

I did and very helpful and answers the distance but guess my question would be the width at a distance of around 32 plus feet.

My understanding is it is a 20 degree cone angle. Spider rigging I can see 1 or 2 of my poles at a time. I remember seeing a video of someone longlinning where you could see several of their jigs 40 feet or so behind their boat.

A simple formula for arc length is s = r x A, where r is the radius, or distance, A is the angle in radians, and s is the arc length. For small angles, arc length is approximately the beam width.
20 degrees is 20/180 * pi radians, or .35 rads. So your beam width would be approximately the distance times 0.35.
    Examples:
For an 18' boat with 10' of rod out the front, XD mounted on transom looking forward, distance is 28', and beam width is about 28 x 0.35 = 9.7'
For a 18' boat with 15' rods out the front, beam width would be approx 33' x 0.35 = 11.5'

Sounds like then depending on spacing of rod tips you could cover about 4 rods.

Seems to me (I long line sometimes, but don't spider rig/push), it would be better to have it up front on a pole mount so you could scan ahead, and steer the boat toward fish you see ahead. I have mine on a pole (FS Bowducer) up front and I like it a LOT.

Reports are that LiveScope is not an "ever-expanding" cone like traditional 2d Sonar ... so arc calculations only apply out to an "unknown" distance (and then the beam gets smaller) ...

Someone will just have to set up Scott's scenario to see how many baits can be seen at once if LiveScope were mounted to the transom ...

I think you would be well served to get Rickie’s Da Ducer transducer mount. You could place it on the bow, side or transom depending on your primary fishing needs and merely turn the transducer to “see” every rod either fore or aft. The Da Ducer will hold the transducer in any position at any speed that you would ever troll or search with. Podunkideas.com
