Default Helix 7 in a million pieces ???

I bought it in november and a Navionics card That I could not get to work. The book that came with it was not much help.. then CDC members told me there was on the Humminbird web site the Operations Manual PDF files. I read them dozens of times then Finally printed them out.. I was hunting for how to turn on the Micro - Card Reader .. In the Satellite screen it said the card was not there -- Took it in and out a Dozen times still nothing === Called Costumer Service finally and they also said when the Card was inserted it was Automatic to come on {NADA} then I had to go get the Software version.. It was 1.64 .. they said that it had to be updated . and gave to my wife the PDF files for another Micro Card for the new software that she put on the Micro card and download onto another Micro Card all the tracks and waypoints then Restore Defaults.. Great,, at restoring the defaults My bird did not do what the service manual said ==== then it locked up on overloaded data === and would not respond to any keys After an hour I turned it off -- the screen counted down to, two, for shutdown then Locked up again for 20 Minutes before it powered off. Tried another two times to restore Defaults before it Blinked at me. I then Inserted the Formated Micro card and it indicated there was a Card in the slot, So I said to myself the Navionics card must be bad then it did not Download the new software --- Then the wife gave me the directions for downloading -- they said, on startup no buttons should be pressed ---- but where they directed to another Tab where the software was suppose to be entered it had to go to the main Menu first -- that is not what the Directions said ==== [ Cant Get to there from Here] The directions said the software version currently installed would show { Nada] Then it would ask something about if I wanted something and I should say No in big black letters [ Didn't Happen} === Instead the Helix LOcked up again on Information overload === The Directions were specific it was to not be turned off for any Reason, Or it might have to be returned for Repair and new software installed ... After 5 hours and nothing and would not turn off , If it had to go back it had to be unpluged.. After about 10 minutes I plugged the power back in and it powered up and still had the old software but at least the memory was not Fried --- you should have seen me putting the transducer in a bucket so it did not Overheat and give me another problem .. If this thing ever gets new software Humminbird is going to do it .. My Brother would have taken a Hammer to it a month ago

The new software is 1.90 .. when it winked at me it did restore Defaults because all five Waypoints created in the Yard while in simulation were gone..

Personally, I would call Humminbird and send the unit to them. Their 1.83, 1.84, and now 1.91 software updates suck as lots of issues and you can read about them on bass boat central bbc.com, as they have a couple of postings and one is weeks old of issues, and now some of those members are being told, they can’t revert their depth finders back to older software versions once they install 1.91 software version. I just bought a new 7 mega DI for 2d and mapping and have it networked but haven’t been out in the boat yet to see if it works as they had 1.84 software installed on it from the factory new, and not sure if it will work even. If it is buggie, I will be raising he#* with Humminbird also. Humminbird definitely has some issues with upgrades in software and I am not upgrading my other 2 mega units as they work ok with older software versions on them. I know you have been having issues so I would call them. Good luck.

Not sure if this applies to your unit or not but I saw this on another forum.

    ******Extremely Important ******
Please take note Helix G1 and G2 users:
There will an official bulletin from Humminbird probably later today or perhaps tomorrow, but I wanted to make sure you were informed as soon as possible.
We will also update shortly the Humminbird website (software download area).

Please take action and update your processes and inform all your relevant staff, dealers and customers.
This information affects HELIX G1 & G2 units
If a unit is running old software (version 1.3x or earlier) and an attempt is made to update the unit to the latest software release (version 1.900) the unit will FAIL and be rendered unusable (it would need to be returned to Humminbird USA to be reflashed).
The solution is to firstly update the unit to software version 1.640 (available on the Humminbird extranet), and then you can update to version 1.900 without any problems.
Units that are already running 1.64 or newer are not affected and can be updated directly to 1.900.

Yeah Stainless, just saw the same posting and think that is his problem. I made a posting in Electronics on this also. What a pain!

Here is your problem "Fish on Line". If you go here to Humminbird's Support on Helix 5 and 7's,,scroll to very bottom of page for small fine print on installing 1.90 and read the instructions.

    https://www.humminbird.com/support/software-updates/HELIX-5-CHIRP-DI-GPS-G2-v-1-900-question

its on the 5 so far but not the 7

Your probably going to have to send your 7 back to humminbird and get the hardrive flashed .

That’s the one thing my dad use to always try and teach me when I was younger. I still had to learn the hard way. Now I find myself telling my kids the same thing while I don’t lol.
