    Default Help please.

I had a Lowrance combo unit. I bought a boat that has a unused HB 598 di si hd. Is there someone who will take their precious time to give me some initial settings to get me started on Florida lakes. And what adjustments I might need to make on the fly. I'm not worried about SI till I get used to the DI. Or steer me to where to learn.
Thanks in advance. PM if you want.

I have that same unit, I believe. 598 ci HD, with "side imaging" labeled on the card door. The DI is a blended view from the SI, not a true DI. The screen is relatively small for viewing side images. I found I was best served with keeping the SI distance to less than 50 feet per side. I hardly ever use the DI view for my fishing but I have it set on the narrow or medium width, usually narrow. As to setting, I'd start in the middle with both the sensitivity and contrast in the SI. DI I usually ran a higher sensitivity for detail. In SI, if your bottom is muddy, you can go up on the sensitivity a fair amount.
When viewing the SI, the reflections of crappie size fish are very small and are easily missed in real time, especially if you are viewing 50'+ per side. This was my first GPS unit and I like that capability very much; also my first unit with a card reader to make recordings of my actual trips. I learned a lot by reviewing my recordings at home and changing settings while doing so. Much more relevant than the simulator as this is YOUR water and YOUR conditions.
I thought this was a good unit but I wanted a larger SI unit for my type of fishing but was well served with this one while it was in use.
On Humminbirds website, they probably have a link to the owners manual if you didn't get one with it. It's very thorough and helpful.

The most important setting in HB SI is to match Chart speed to boat speed for the best images ...

Lowrance SideScan doesn't have imaging Chart speed so the best images will be at a boat speed of 3-4mph ...

If I make adjustments on HB 598 settings, will that adjustment show also in the simulator?

I believe yes, you should see the results on the simulator. Note that the speed on the simulator is around 5 mph or so so your chart speed should be set about the same. The image looks odd if you change the chart speed up or down by a goodly amount. And if I remember correctly, there is no 83 megahertz recording on that unit. 200 only in the standard sonar view.
Remember, you can always go back and restore the defaults if you forget what you've done.

If looking for pretty pictures then po`s advise is the way to go. But for me I usually run my SI scroll speed faster then boat speed as I find especially for Crappies it extends the fish and makes them easier to pic out. Normally I do not care what is on the bottom if there are no fish there. If I find fish then I may match chart and boat speed to get a better view of why they are there..

So Rickie, should you increase the ping speed as well to sharpen the image? Especially at that speed?

HB does not have a ping speed adjustment except during recording (and that only dictates how much data is written to the SD card to give the opportunity to slow the ping speed down {collecting less data} ... to allow recording for a longer period of time before filling up the SD card) ...

Lowrance ping speed only affects the 2d sonar ...IIRC ...
