    Default DI question

I have a fiberglass flat bottom, Florida folk know it as a Stumpknocker, and am interested in upgrading for from an Eagle Fish ID 128 - it’s ok, laugh- mounted on TM to a DI that will operate on plane. The bottom is fiberglass and plywood. Will a shoot through transducer work?

Lord knows I appreciate those who understand the electronic stuff, but it is beyond this humble typist. Is there is something that will show depth, some conture, and maybe a fish?

The Eagle still works like it did when new, but is slower than Congress.

    Any suggestions?

I don't think it will shoot thru plywood...

If it does work it's probably not going to work very good.

The 2d would probably work fine but di would most probably suffer quite a bit. You could always mount on transom and get 2d shoot thru Hull diver and splitter cable. Glass it to inside so it would work at speed then have di when you slow down

Plywood has air in the cells - NO WAY.

Get ready to be AMAZED with the new units!

I was told to leave all tackle at home the first and second trips after upgrading as it would not get used.

    I don't think so

First time I took my Lowrance Elite 5DSI out, I found so many places to fish (that I was previously unaware of) and got such clear pictures of what my previous 2d sonar was showing as "blobs" that I spent most of the day fishing these places. Some were new, but most were old, familiar spots that I had fished many times before, but just didn't know exactly "what" it was I was fishing in. It was probably the 4th or 5th time using it before I took the time to dial in the settings that gave me screen shots like these :

Thanks for your confidence, Pappy. This user has NOT been invited to join the Brain Trust here, esp. regarding electronics. With a new way to see and so much to interpret there are benefits to keeping it slow and simple. There is a reason I do not chew gum while standing.

Don't feel too bad .... I used Eagle/Lowrance 2d sonar (b/w) units for about 40yrs, and basically just used them to tell me the depth.

Even at factory settings, a DI unit will give you a much clearer picture of what you just went over (as evidenced by the screenshots).

I have my DI unit on the trolling motor, since I spend more time looking at the unit when I'm at the bow fishing, rather than in the driver's seat going from spot to spot. Actually, I now have a Hook 7 unit (DI & 2d) ... and don't even bother using the 2d sonar. My E5DSI unit was DI only, and I'd still be using it if I hadn't wiggled the power cord too many times trying to get the plug in/out. I bent one of the pins doing that, and after straightening one of them one time too many ... it broke. That unit is a few years out of production and I couldn't find a used one or broken one (for parts), so I just bought the Hook 7 to replace it. I happened to find it on sale for less than what I paid for the E5DSI unit, that I bought used from a site member.

Like I said ... all those years of using 2d sonar units, that I could just plug/play, left me a little bumfuzzled when I started using the down image unit. So, I did what most other members do ... I posted about it & discussed it with more knowledgeable people. That turned into an 88 page thread full of charts, pics, and enough "how to" info that I got pretty good with it. Here's that thread if you want to look thru it and check out the charts/pics/info for a better understanding of what a DI unit can do & why it does it : https://www.crappie.com/crappie/fish...-chartplotter/
