How can I effectively use my Hummingbird Helix 5 SI/DI sonar in less than 10 feet of water.

Good question. I'm gonna wait for an answer, too.

In shallow water it is best to run the unit in switchfire clear mode ..... the unit will then automatically adjust the power based on depth.

In addition to Bob's advice ... It is sometimes beneficial to set the 2d "Lower Range" setting under the Sonar xpress menu to a value just below actual water depth ...

This puts the display in manual where the 2d bottom contour is not automatically jumping up and down on the 2d image to keep the bottom detail in the middle of the display ...

Setting the "Lower Range" setting to a value just below water depth also stretches the echoes out vertically on the 2d image to make structure and fish look larger ...

Thanks for the advice, fellas. My new Helix 5 is enroute to me, and this is a major, I say major upgrade for me. I'm sure I'll have some more questions when I get it mounted!
