I use a Wagner heat gun what heat setting do you have it on ? I have my set on the 2nd from the highest setting and when I heat my head I hold it about 2 - 3 inches above the nozzle and heat my jig...

I tried the heat shrink tube over the hook eye and wow it works GREAT !!!
It a little more work but it produced a paint free hook eye...
