I would see if you could find a Motorguide Bulldog 40 or 54 in stock somewhere. I'm not sure if they are still in production but I have one on my 14 footer and it works great.

Using a transom mount just didnt work on my jon boat. I had a variable speed as well. When sitting in the back the front raised up and just became a sail. I wouldn't even go out on light breezy days...
