I use 5' ugly stick lites. Never have to worry about breaking a ugly stick. I'd stay in the 5'-5'6" range on whatever rod you feel most comfortable with.

I'd say if your line is twisting up, probably using too big or too stiff a line. Also, filling the spool on your reel too full will cause the line to spool off and twist up. I always stop around...
