    Default Something Different!

Since retirement Ive stayed pretty busy. Atleast busy enough that I dont miss working nor do I think about it either. Between keeping my place and Dad's up (90 years young now), fishing, fooling around with the dog, and the deer hunting properties I have been quite busy.

It wasnt long ago the cameras on one of the deer properties showed a hugh hog either right at dusk dark or into the night around the feeders. He was showing up almost daily. I talked with a few folks that supposely trap or hunt hogs and they told me if he's that big of a old boar he's too smart and wouldnt go in a small trap but one of the guys loaned me one of his traps anyway.

That trap was a little big to handle by myself so I decided to go one evening with my rifle before dark and sit in a box blind I had between the two food plots (a feeder on each one). As luck would have it he stepped out right at dusk dark with only a couple minutes of light left. He came out on the closest feeder and wasnt more thn 60 yards or so away. He looked like a bear! WAY BIGGER than any other hog I ever got pics of in that area. At the angle he was standing I immediately put the cross hairs right where the base of his neck and front shoulder joined. My .300 Mag rang out and after the muzzle blast and recoil I saw him run out of the plot.

I woulda thought that .300 would have knocked him over but from what I saw it almost appeared I missed him all together. Couldnt have been though as I KNEW where those crosshairs were when that gun went off. (I'm pretty disciplined with shooting a rifle.) I was on a good solid rest and had it on him. Anyway, I spent a few minutes getting everything together before walking over there. Being a bit cautious I looked where he was standing and couldnt find hair, blood, not even scuff marks on the ground. Could it be? Was my rifle kicked over at the house and the sights off? All these thoughts ran thru my mind while standing there. That boar was in the neighborhood of 200 lbs or more IMO and was big and ugly. I wasnt anxious to go thru the clearcut looking for what coulda been a wounded boar hog at night so I quickly made up my mind he wouldnt be fit to eat anyway so I just headed home.

A few days later me and the dog went to the area to change out camera cards and I smelled the hog as we were riding in on the 4 wheeler thru the clearcut. Parking the wheeler, I walked into the general area I smelled him and when I got to the hog the dog was already there. (The dog barking is how I knew where it was laying.) The heat has done it's damage so it wasnt picture worthy but atleast I know I shot him and he was dead. Actually he only ran a short little semi-circle and fell dead and wasnt more than 40 yards in a straight line from where he was shot.

There's some first hand experience for me showing how tough those critters can be. I thought.....all is good now. No more hogs. Wait! A week later now that old "Big Boy" was no longer around these two showed up. Yep.....2 smaller boar hogs. Ugh!

So.......the next day I bought some corn and out went the trap. I put a camera on it so I could see the pictures and after a few nights the hogs got a bit used to the trap sitting about 15 yards away from one of the feeders. Those two hogs and plenty of curious deer came all around the trap, along with coons and squirrels stealing all the corn inside. But it didnt take long before curiosity got the better of them. So yesterday morning this is what I found...

That one is now in the fridge cooling. On hoof he weighed 135 lbs. Either the other one will make the same mistake or either he will move on. Either way....win-win in my opinion. That hog yesterday makes 5 to come out of that area which is behind some houses about 500 yards straight thru the woods from my house. 3 dead by crossbow, 1 dead from the deer rifle, and 1 dead from the trap...all from the past few years AND without me actually hunting them seriously.

Anyway fellas, just wanted to share my hog experience with you guys to read so you'll know I do stay somewhat busy during my retirement and aint just sitting around! HA!

Thanks for the pig tell; I am glad you are busy doing what you want to do. Best way to be retired. I think you'll have more visitors in the future. We have them close to us on our lease. They tend to hang closer to the river bottoms than the higher land where we are. I hope it stays that way. Keep busy and don't forget to keep us posted on everything unusual like the hogs! Fishing reports are better.
