...Santee? Specifically around the Stumphole area? We were planning on coming down for a couple days this weekend looking for Shellcrackers, and was just wondering if the crappie spawn has ended? Or would we be wasting time looking for them back in the woods? Thanks!

There are still a few black crappie shallow, but most are migrating out of the woods now. White crappie are spawning on this full moon. Stumphole is not going to be your best bet to catch many. From what I’ve been hearing the shell cracker bite has been slow at best. Not sure what is up with that.

    Thanks for the info.
I talked to someone at Poplar Creek who said a few were catching limits and others not finding many. Shellcrackers that is. We'll poke around but what water depth should we be looking at? I'm thinking under 4' and maybe less. Do they spawn up in the river at all?

And if Stumphole may not be the best bet for crappie, then where would be a good place to look? Jack's Creek or Poplar Creek? Frankly, we're willing to catch whatever is biting and only have a couple days since today (Saturday) was a washout. Realistically I don't know where to start even looking for crappie down there other than checking docks or jigging the weed beds. We're hoping to find some Shellcrackers and trying to find crappie would be plan B.
    Thanks again Inkdabber!

I know this is late but I just saw it. 4 feet or less for Shellcrackers, they do catch them in the River as well. Jacks is good for crappie, Poplar creek not so much. There is little grass left in the lake so that is not an option. Lily pads in the deeper depths will hold fish with the shad spawn going on. Brush fishing has been heating up as well.

Late response here as well. We had a good trip though catches were a bit disappointing.(As evidenced in the other full moon thread) We mainly target Shellcrackers but at several places I dropped jigs under the weeds, lily pads, etc. By the second day we spent most of our time in the logjam. But thanks for taking the time to try and help us out, I really do appreciate it.

In the lakes around here, I find crappie on shoreline trees and tree tops that have fallen in the water, shallow during the spawn. Prespawn this year I found a few suspended around old treetops in deep water on steep banks which are plentiful in these mountain lakes. Obviously, brushy structure is key. Down at Santee, that brushy structure is everywhere and everything is shallow at the upper end of Marion, with the exception of some bends up in the river. Even where to start looking remains a mystery to me.
