    Default Couple questions...

First question: Did I see the water levels were way down on Marion? Seems I saw an article or YouTube or something a couple weeks back and meant to refer back to it but couldn't find it.

Second question: I was watching a YouTube of a professional guide on a public lake (don't want to say which one) who was making a video of himself sinking brush for a brushpile. But in his commentary he said along the lines of,

"Some people want to ride around looking for brushpiles instead of putting in the work to build 'em, and then fish the ones they find." "I'm not saying there's any law against it, because there's not, it's fair game." "But it tells you something about the person and the type fisherman they are if they'll fish another man's brushpile."

In essence, questioning the character of a person who "would fish another man's brushpile".

Now the reason I bring this up, never in my life, even as a boy being mentored by adults, have I even heard the suggestion that there was some question with fishing ANY brush you happened upon. It was normal to try and find docks particularly, that had brush on it.

And even now, I don't have any idea how a person is supposed to look at their sonar and distinguish between natural brush, or that which was put there. At least I don't know how. Further, I've never heard it suggested that sinking brush in a public lake made that spot your personal domain.

Or did my parents miss something and fail in my upbringing?

Once it leaves your hand and is in the water it belongs to everyone.

Strictly my opinion........I think if you are a brush pile fisherman then you should be putting out brush to fish. If/when you stumble across other piles then by all means fish 'em. If/when someone else stumbles across your brush piles then they can fish those. Brush piles in a lake is public property. Anyone can fish 'em on any given day. First come first serve. Like I said....JMO...

In my humble opinion, any brush pile sunk on a public waterway becomes public property to be fished by anyone that finds it. I know I would and with out guilt of any sort.

Well that's pretty much what I've always felt. I agree if you fish brush piles to any extent then you should build some and a brush pile on your home lake you built is open for all and anyone fishing it is not doing anything wrong. Traveling to other lakes and putting out brush piles may not be practical but finding brush and fishing it carries no ethical dilemma whatsoever IMO. Neither situation is in any way reflective of a person's lack of character, that's why I was blown away by the suggestion.

Of course there is no reason in this world to share with anyone the location of your brush piles!

I was planning on going in a couple weeks, upper Marion area. Having never fished crappie there, I have no idea so it will be a prospecting trip, hopefully not a bust.
Any advice where to start looking?
Shoreline docks? Creek mouths? trees at Stumphole? Grass mats? And what's the most productive baits, jigs or minnows? I typically fish jigs but I know some times minnows is the only thing that will produce, and maybe particularly this time of year.

BTW, thank you for the water report. Would love to see a report from your Saturday trip.

Over many years of crappie fishing I have places 100's of brush piles in many different lakes. It doesn't take much time to improve lake cover for fish. I have had people move my piles when the lake level drops, this really gets in my craw! There are many out there that fishes brush piles and never even thinks about putting in a little work to improve the piles they fish. Once in the lake the brush piles are everyone's to fish and I have some that are over 40 years old that no telling how many crappie have been pulled of those piles. If you are new to crappie fishing and to brush pile fishing take the time to learn about crappie, their movements and cover they need, then help place some brush piles or improve the ones you fish. It helps you and every other fisherman, even helps the lazy fisherman.

Not meaning to ruffle any feathers, but anyone that questions the sentiment of the guide in the video has probably not put in much brush.... sinking brush is a pile of work and I believe if you consider yourself a brush pile fisherman then you too should sink brush. I’m not talking about fishing the occasional pile found or fishing a dock with brush. If you find one fish it, but help out the cause and sink some of your own. Don’t be a lazy fisherman. Couple caveats to my opinion are folks unable to put in the work due to age or physical limitations but those are few and far between.

Once it hits the water it’s public domain. That’s a fact. But if you’ve ever sunk brush and not been able to fish it because others are on it or others have fished all week and cleaned it off while you were at work, you’d understand why people get testy.

Not much different than a garden. Could you imagine planting and working a garden and then have others get the majority of the crop!?! It happens in the brush pile world

Well I'll play devil's advocate (I hate that term) for the sake of discussion....

So every "new" lake a fisherman visits, he should sink a brush pile so he'll have a place to fish? Even lakes in other states he only gets to visit a few times a year? Seems somewhat of an impractical undertaking IMO, outside of your home lake.
Sure, if I put in a brush pile only to find someone else fishing it, would admittedly be a bit irritating. But that's ultimately my problem. That's why I build multiple piles on my home lake. If someone's on one, I go to another spot.

As far as the garden analogy, I don't personally know of, nor have I ever heard of anyone planting a garden on public land. But if they did and "the public" helped themselves, the crop is, after all public domain. Certainly no professional farmer would dream of trying to earn a living off public land, even though fishing guides do earn their living off public water. (And no, I have no problem with that and have used guides myself)

But ultimately, for clarity, the insinuation was anyone "fishing another man's brush pile" lacked something in the ethical/character department. My specific question was, "is fishing a pile of brush underwater that you didn't put there in some way wrong?", as this person insinuated. I believe the overall consensus is, once you put brush into a public lake it's no longer YOUR brush pile.
