    Default Eating Wylie Crappie

    do you do it?

I hear a lot about sewage spills, pcb's, and pollution on Wylie. Does anyone know if there is a specific order to not eat fish caught from there?

How do you guy feel about eating fish from Wylie, and how do other lakes compare, like Wateree or others?

    thanks for the info

It’s really neat how scientific it all is but long story short between SC dnr, NC dnr, Winthrop University, 3rd party research etc. there is no clear warning against crappie. There are warnings for other fish. But no warnings for crappie praise the Lord. It is all scientific and stuff about fat, blood, diet, etc. All I know is they know enough to have restrictions on some that means they know enough to not have restrictions on others i.e. crappie. And maybe others? Perch etc. not sure about that. Definite bass restrictions among others. Hope this helps

Yes, I eat fish out of Wylie and other places. I think it is safe! You have to remember that Wylie along with all the other lakes are free flowing not sitting bodies of water. You get down to the low lands of SC where water sits a long time then I'd think twice. Sewage spills flow down river, PCB's settle on the bottom. As long as it's not stirred up on the bottom you will be okay. Fish such as bass and catfish feed on the bottom a lot eating muscles, worms, crawfish, leaches and so forth that live there on the bottom. Crappie may pick stuff off the bottom but not as much as bass and catfish. Crappie feed up and chase shad and minnows and things that float like Mayflies, June bugs and other flying bugs. No warnings are posted for crappie at any lakes that I know of. One half pound for bass and catfish a week for Wylie I believe it is. It's posted at all boat ramps on the bill board. I don't worry about eating fish out of Wylie. I have never heard of anyone getting sick or die from it. I know everyone has his her reason not to eat fish from Wylie, but Wylie is not polluted from goose poop! It all floats down river to fast to worry about it. Catch'em and have a good fish fry!

I fish Wylie more than any other lake. I also cook fish from there pretty much once a week. All fish from Wylie.
We keep Crappie, Perch, and Catfish mostly. A bream once in awhile.
    Nothing else.
I've been eating out of there all my life.

Biomagnification doesnt allow for the buildup of toxins in those small, short lived fish, to affect us very much without making it pretty much every meal you eat.

Delicious! I’ve been eating them for years without any noticeable side effects.

Been eating crappie out of the Wateree river chain for a very long time, as well as blue cats. I dont eat fish from any river/lake that eat off the bottom but if you are eating crappie or blues which both feed up and off of living/swimming food I dont see nor have had any problems. My biggest problem is not catching enough to eat.....now that is a large problem!!
