Depending what stream you are fishing can determine the best tackle required. I guide streams in Pa running into lake Erie. I like a 6 weight medium action 9 ft rod. Water can be clear and usually low in the fall so 4x flurocarbon is a big help. Flashy streamers and wollybugers are good choices. Many use egg patterns so I keep away as they are over fished.IMO.
Larger streams such as the Salmon river in New York requires bigger tackle. Ten foot 7 weights would be a good choice. The water can run hard so a lot of weight is required for most days on the water. Large nymphs and egg patterns are very popular. It is more of a chuck and duck type stream most of the time.
Ohio can have small and big water as well as Michigan. Pa is hard to beat in the fall but not my first choice for spring fishing.
