I never found adding scent to a fly for trout helped. However I have added vanilla to honey bugs for carp and it helps. However you get 3 or 4 cast then it is not effective. I put it in a 35 mm film canister and soak the dry fly in it then sight cast. Carp have turned around from a foot or two to take the fly.

A honey bug us a fly made with cotton chenille wrapped around the hook. Somewhat like a mop fly. This fly has been around for over 60 years.
