    Default Pa trout season

Our trout season started the week of 4/7/20. Do to the virus it was announced at 7:00 am and was in effect at 8:00 am. The Pa fish and boat commission is doing all the stocking with fish commission personal only. There is no advance notice on when or where the trout will be stocked.
In my area two streams are currently fishing well. The Yellowbreeches and Mountain Creek. Both are located in Cumberland co. This is north of Gettysburg Pa. We also have a decent number of wild brown in the main stream and brook trout in the upper areas of some creeks.
Bait fishermen are doing very well with power bait for Rainbows with worms and minnows being excellent for the Brooks and Browns. Spin fishermen are using trout magnets and assorted metal lures.Fly fishermen can catch many stocked fish on woolly buggers and white streamers. We do have 2 fly hatches. Grannoms and dark Hendricksons are the main stay. You need imitations in nymph, wet and drys. Early may we will start to see Sulphur mayflys. Good luck and be safe.

It has been almost a week since my last post. I fished for trout several days this week. We have not had any decent fly hatches so the wild Brown trout are holding tight however the State has restocked 2 streams in my area. One was a brook trout only stocking on a freestone mountain stream. These fish were fairly large in the 3/4 to a pound size. Another stream near Gettysburg got restocked also and I caught Rainbow and Brown trout from that stocking. So far I only caught 2 wild Browns and one was about 5 inches long. To me this is a real trophy and a great sign. I often wonder what our Pa trout fishing was like 150 years ago. I know they would have been mainly brook trout but it would have been interesting. Good luck and stay safe.

    May fly hatch update:
No two streams are alike but I will post some information I have gained in the last 45 years.
Early May is the start of the mid season fly hatches. This can vary do to your location and weather conditions. South central Pa. will see two types of Sulphur. Mayflys. Basicly a size 12-14 yellow body with cream light tan tail and legs ( hackle). However some will see sulphurs with a lime green body. Conowago creek near Gettysburg has this coloration of this mayfly. Also a smaller version tied on a size 16-18 hook. Usually caddis flys will have a cream body and same color wing and hackle in May on. Size 14 is very common. However I was on the South Houlston a few years ago in Tennessee after memorial-day and there was Black caddis size 16-18 coming off. This is a tail race fishery so things can be different then many free flowing streams. Also some streams will see March browns and a few other hatches. Our spring trip usually would be in a few weeks to the upper Delaware river and this is what I usually observe. We usually see Sulphurs cream caddis and March Browns. The March Browns are very large and size 6-8 hooks is what I use. When a large trout takes one of these flys you can hear the rise. It sounds like some one threw a brick into the water as the rise is that violent. A little later in June we should see light cahills in my area. Hope some can add to this list and make it a useful tool as a guide to be prepared for your next outing.
