Why are you wrapping or tying the tip?

I haven't put a tip tie on a rod in 20 years Skeetbum. It does not have any functional purpose. It might help appearance I guess. On the down side it adds some weight to the tip. I have never had a tip come off of a rod. I use Flexcoat tip adhesive. I do have a little technique for installing one. My two cents worth!

For a lesser price point the Mudhole spinning kits are nice. I have two and think they are a superor value. Check out Custom CRB Color Series Rod Building Kits | MudHole.com

I am building another rod I got from Schneiders Rod Shop in Arkansas. He made me a "kit" and hope to have it on the water next weekend. He really worked with me to create a rod to my exact specifications. Schneidersrods-

I second what Schmang just said. I bought an inexpensive house brand blank of theirs, a 6’ rated for 2-6lb test for mid teens price. Not far from finishing it and used some guides that have a stainless ring inside a light stainless frame. Much lighter than the Fuji’s I normally use. I used 8 guides and the three under the tip are just plain small. Hope to finish and coat it tomorrow. Already have my fancy windings I used on my fly rod in place. So many layout mistakes but it looks good and will fish very well. New spinner is in the foreground.

Sorry I didn’t get right back to you Tom. I’m wrapping the tip and not at all sure this spinner will get a tip dressing. These are for me so they get some treatment but I’m still a rookie and it shows. Not sure what you mean when you say tying a tip. The tough wraps o spoke of were on the tip section.the diameter was so small that if I relaxed the tension at all they would unroll instantly into a puff of curls.

Skeetbum that cross wrap thread pattern is outstanding. I never had the patience or skill to do that intricate thread work. On the thread wrap next to the tip top guide I just believe the guide is attached with a high melt adhesive or epoxy in some cases. That wrap at the thinnest part of the rod is the most challenging to do. I just feel that that wrap at the tip is not needed for performance and I don't use it on rods that I build. I guess I'm just saving myself the grief of tying it there.

Thanks Tom, I appreciate the compliment. The fly rod got special treatment because it was the first and I wanted it to be the best I could do at the time. The spinner has some layout mistakes and some issues that showed up during coating, but it was built to fish and take much more of a beating than the Fenwick will ever see. Basically threw it together over a day and a half after sitting on the parts for over a year. And my patience is selective and I seem to be able to find some for things like this and have none for many other things. The process isn’t hard and with your knowledge it would be easier than you might think. Just do t use the A size thread unless you have to, I have to use a round magnifying light or I can’t see some of the detail.

I have a suggestion for you Skeetbum. Had one of these for probably 30 years now. I have them on most of the time I am wrapping rods and also when I am tying jigs and flies. I've taught several guys how to build rods and recommended it to them. They got them also. Believe me it will allow you to see detail in a way you don't see now. This is the exact one I have. Mine did not come from Amazon 30 years ago!!!Name: Screenshot_20200902-225952_Chrome.jpg
