    Default Guides?

Adding guides stiffens a rod blank and creates little flat spots in the arc of the rod, correct,?
Assuming that is true, is there a way to use a lot less thread to attach a guide?

Seems to me using minimal thread and epoxy would be better if its still secure.
    Thanks

I would think the length of the guide foot would have the greatest influence on the rod stiffness

Jack is correct. The longer the foot, the greater the flat spot. That being said, the main reason to add more guides to a rod is to allow for a smooth arc and transition. Look at a 6ft 6 rod with 5 eyes and load it. You will see it!

Many of today's quality guide eyes are in the micro catagory and have very small feet to them. Your stripper eye and maybe 2nd eye will have a longer foot but normally isn't an issue as the god isn't loading or flexing that far down.

As for wrapping, you can wrap as little as an 1/8th of an inch beyond the foot and be fine but, if look is what you are going for, that might be an issue. There are several rod finishes you can buy now that actually flex. Materials of today are better than even 5 years ago.

I'd go with single foot guides past the stripper guide.

All of wicks points are about spot on. On a crappie rod I wouldn’t put any double footed guides as it is way over kill. Nothing you hook will put enough of a load on the drag to rip the guide off with super light line. The line will brake miles before that is even a thought. I don’t even put them on red fish spinning rods I build for people. Only thing I put double footed guides on are bait casting rods (I use 3 and then do belly and runner guides out because of the line wanting to roll to the bottom of the blank) and if I build a off shore or something someone is going to be using heavy line lots of drag and big fish. ( catfish musky bull reds sharks list goes on.
