    Default general rod building topics

So we’re not taking away from ones build post lets have put questions and conversations and ideas here.

But skeet I’m headed over to FTU in Houston to pick up some stuff for a build so I’ll ask terry what first stripper guide size he thinks would be good for your build. I would say a 16 is probably about right I’ve used 12s and never had a problem. Most sets start at a 20 or 25.

I have a set of guides that I stripped off of a rod and only needed a couple to fill in and get a smaller stripper and to my surprise, they carry the exact guides. Long story shorter, I got a 20 as I already had the next smaller and larger size. These will work for the spinning rod, so we then moved to the guides I stripped off of my broken fly rod. Keep in mind I know the basics but I’m not familiar with the components in detail yet. For a 4wt they seemed to be much heavier, material not weight, than I needed for the rod. Bought a set of light wire guides that I’ll use on it and a new tip to go with it. Next is to lay out the placement of the guides and see how the line looks going through them with a little bit of a load on it. I’m still deciding if I like the way I finished the chevron on the hook holder end. It was much easier years ago when I just wrapped everything with one color thread and smiled a lot. Thanks for your patience.

If you have a computer with excel, there is a great tool that will give you some great placement numbers based on the length of rod, number of eyes you plan to use, and placement of your stripper eye.

I use this tool as a starting point and honestly, I've never had to change the location of an eye after a deflection test. I believe I reference it in one of the sticky notes above. If not, let me know and I'll get it to you. It is free of course.

I never use A thread on a chevron or diamond and I just did one. So if that’s what you used I feel for you that was one of the hardest wraps I’ve done in a long time to keep tight. And at the end of the day on your guides, if its what you like and have, that’s the point of a custom build. Can’t wait to see some pics. I’ve got 3 builds coming that I honestly can’t wait for. Come on parts from Japan.

I questioned my choice when I got into it. It turned out good for a first, just putting the finishing ends on the binding wraps and I’ll be looking to put a coat on it before something dumb happens. Pics soon. Looking forward to see the upcoming rods you’re doing.
