Default Materials tools and componants list

Feel free to add any web locations to this list as it should be "growing" all the time! I'm sure a lot of you know some great places to purchase materials that some of us might not know about.

If you are interested in learning how to build rods, I recommend YouTube. Specifically "GetBit Outdoors" with Captain Kevin Brotz. He has a great selection of short videos that take you through every step of the rod building process.

Here is a list of locations I use to purchase materials, blanks, and componants:

    Jann's Netcraft

    MudHole

I have all these catalogs listed above. My problem is, ( and probably from not understanding ), I can't find a rod blank for 2-6lb line. Or am I just not understanding what I'm looking at on the discription pages...Looking at 9'-12' rods at all catalogs. Can someone explain it to me. Pm me if yo want. thanks. Eric, AKA" jamesdean".

I have built several in the past and have two in work now... but they are 7 foot spinning rods. I looked EVERYWHERE in the past and cannot find long (18 foot) crappie rod blanks.

    Anyone have a clue?

    James,

It might be helpful to let us know exactly what you are looking to do with the rod? Is it going to be used to throw a float, jig lilly pads, long line troll, or kind of an ATV type of rod being able to do all of them?

Unlike rods purchased off from the shelf that might have a specific OZ weight maximum for the size bait it is intended for, or specific line weights, custom rods are built primarily on the weight of the rod (not how heavy it is but rather UL, Light, Medium Light, Medium ect...) as well as action. Understanding what the rod is going to be used for will weigh heavily on what type of blank that one might recommend!

As an example. Say you wanted a very light weight (light in the hands) rod in the 9 foot range that you can verticle jig light weight jigs, long line troll some very light weight jigs, or cast a float a country mile. I might recommend a Fly Rod blank in a 3 or 4 weight to build your spinning rod with!

I forgot to add one of the BEST tools I have in my arsenal. It is a tool designed to give you the best guide eye spacing for any length of rod based on the number of eyes you would like to put on it. I used to utilize the standard spacing and guide count that comes with most rods but found that they produce pinch points on the blank. Also, those spacing charts are usually designed for one specific type of guide eye. When you change to a different set that has longer or shorter legs, it changes the dynamics of the spacing. This tool (Excel document) will calculate the exact distance needed for each eye.

wicklundrh, Thank you so much for this "how-to" download. The spacing charts are going to be very helpful on these longer rods. I followed your postings to find the hand rod wrappers and looking at them, and my pile of scraps from a few other honey do projects, I decided to tackle building one myself as they didn't seem that hard to make and had most everything already in my shop/ shed. The upright for the tensioner stand proved a bit challenging as I don't have a vise, nor can I see through things to make sure it is perfectly straight. If the slight off angle proves to be a hindrance, I will rebuild it. Not really that difficult. Other factors May have been in the mix as well as to why it's off a bit, but that's for another time.Name: IMG_20180803_064646.jpg

As one can see in the last picture the upright for the tensioner is off just a bit. But all in all not bad. And checking prices at my local Lowe's, if I would have had to purchase everything from scratch, this would have cost me a bit over $25.00. The felt came from Hobby Lobby for under a dollar and still have a lot left from that 1 sq. ft. piece. Still need to stain and varnish but a good start to building/ rebuilding some rods. thank you very much for the info and guidance. Eric, AKA "jamesdean".

Awesome. I was going to show a project I did awhile back but just haven't gotten around to completing it.

I too have built one that I would consider ideal for what I do. As said though, it isn't quite finished yet so I still use my old one.

    Nice work!

I was looking at some motorized rod turners for doing the wrapping and the cost is so staggering from what a hand rod wrapper was. Well I have made my own hand rod wrapper. I also went on line and looked for a sewing machine motor with a foot controller as a combined unit. I found this,Name: IMG_20180807_161211.jpg
Views: 592
Size: 59.1 KB at overstock.com for under $60.00 delivered to the door. So now I will be getting/ Making a chuck to hold the rod blank both with a grip in stalled and just the rod blank by itself...I looked and found an old beat up bottom half of a 2 pc. rod to use for practicing the butt wrap on. The old foam type grip was coming off in a powder form when ever you touched it, so all that had to go. Even though the rod seat was loose and just spinning between the upper and lower grip sections I didn't find anything wrong with it so I held onto it when I took the grips off.
I figured this section of rod will allow me to practice keeping the wraps tight, as well as trying some of the fancier wraps till I can get the rods I want to actually make and start using...Just toooo many rods in the fire going on at one time for one person at the moment to start on something new at the time. Finishing up my boat build, honey doe's around the house, putting up a fence to keep baby girl in the yard, putting another entrance, with a gate, from the front deck into the yard, pressure wash the house, replace the water control valves on the clothes washers, install a water spicket on the outside the house so a garden hose can be used....etc, etc.....that's just the beginning of the list....ooooh boooyyyy!!!! Till later folks. Eric, AKA, "jamesdean".
