lantern question

I have one of the coleman pump style lanterns and just retrieved it from someone in my families where it had been stored for a while. It worked fine the last time i used it, which was about a year ago. However now, it will not pump right and build up pressure. I took the pump piece out and cant really find anything wrong with it. The seal looks a little worn but okay. Also, the fuel knob for increasing the fuel just turns very easily. I dont know if it is messed up too or just freely turns due to no air pressure from a faulty pump. Have any of you guys tried to fix a lantern like this or is it just better to buy a new one?

Just buy a replacement pump. Walmart carried them the last time I needed one. The internals are very simple so get a new generator while you are at it.

Try this web sight it has a lot of good info there. You might try to oil the leather on the pump & also you could tighten the nut behind the fuel knob. Jim C.

I have used this kind of lantern since I was a kid. If the thing is not used regularly the seals dry out. All I ever had to do was oil them up and let soak in 3 in one oil, then they worked fine again. You can also tighten the packing nut on the stem if the knob turns to freely. Give it a try and you'll probably be back in business.

I agree with waterboy1...thats what we always use to do with the "old" ones we had laying around.

Turn the leather pump cup inside-out and soak it in oil overnight. Then turn it right side-out and put it back in. That usually works for a while. Coleman still carries the leather replacements, if you need one. They work better than the new rubber ones.
