I just posted this on the jig tying board and thought there would be no harm in posting it here. Does anyone know about preparing full pheasant tails to keep for tying purposes? There's just that little bit of meat at the base of the tail that looks to have the potential draw maggots. I salted the tails and let them air out. Is there anything else I need to do?
I just would use salt and some borax. Hang it high and let it dry.
Yeah I dried all kinds of pheasant tails actually the drape of the necks too. Quail feathers squirrell tails. One of my best jigs last year was grey squirrel tail and 8 or 10 strands of flashabou. Worked very well on cloudy days in stained water.
Just stick em in salt. Salt will cure them and dry them. Shoot the wife used them last year to decorate the christmas tree.
I just wish I had done some pheasant hunting out west this year. My bird dog keeps giving me the evil eye. How were the pheasant numbers in Oklahoma this year?
