They usually hook themselves if you are moving or not. Especially with live bait. One piece advice I got of this crappie.com at some point. When you have a fish on and go to pick up the rod, always lift up. Don't let the rod tip go drop while you are getting it out of the holder. The slack can allow the fish to get off. I have experienced this recently. And I have told everyone since that it was the world record crappie.
Also, if you can wait, LOL. Let them swim a few seconds before you reel them in and you might catch another on the other hook.
