1/16/23 Russell Report

Got on water at daylight with hopes of starting off where things left off the day prior. Man I should have slept in.Things started really slow and I tried all over the lower rocky river. Spotted bass bit fair with around 8 being caught with 2 of really good size. Kept 13 yellow perch and caught a good many small ones. Most of the strikes came between 11:00am and 1:30 pm, kinda odd I think. 30-35 foot in secondary creek channels seems to be the key. I caught a few the last couple days on points and humps but those spots were primarily covered up with spotted bass. I’m not sure why I’m not catching any white perch in rocky. Fishing the same way in Savannah river side has been producing far more white perch than yellow perch…..go figure. If anyone can share how to attach pictures I will do so, just can’t seem to locate how.

Are you minnow fishing and targeting the depths you like? How are you finding the yellow perch? Any more details you care to share? Curious is all...

I’m looking for flat bottom open water and getting just close enough to the tree line to not get hung up. Secondary creeks/ long coves that are holding lots of bait. Bottlenecks help. Use 2 hook drop shot rigs for best results. Good luck!

Ive always heard right off the end of the golf course at Lake Russell Park in the Savannah River filled coolers with yellow perch once winter sets in....the rougher weather the better, but Ive never tried 'em before.

That’s correct, I fished there 2 weeks ago and caught a mix bag of white and yellow perch. The further you go down the lake the bigger the yellow perch are. There is a whole lot of bait in there right now. I also saw several people hanging lanterns off the van creek bridge. Usually the crappie are pretty plentiful when you see them consistently fishing off that bridge.Come to think of it that’s the only bridge I have seen people fish off of on Russell, but I could be wrong.

The law stopped fishing from that bridge several years ago. It got so bad wood was being burned for heat in 55 gal barrels right on the middle of the bridge. But since then the law has eased back off allowing fishing there again. I used to night fish from my boat around the bridge but done better on up past the bridge about 100 yards where the first major depth change occurs. I was fishing for crappie though.
