Hernando lake info
Well me and the wife have been coming down to Florida for the past few years in April for a week fishing trip. We usually fish the St. Johns river but decided to do something different this year. She wanted to try the other side so we have a place rented on the upper end of what I guess is Hernando lake in Hernando, Fl. It is on a canal that dumps into the lake. Any of you guys that are from that area with any info feel free to give me any tips or information. We fish for a little of everything. We will do a lot of bass and bream fishing and some crappie. We have not had tons of success with the crappie in Florida but have done well with the bass and bream. Thanks in advance.

I fish Hernando Lake relatively often, but hadn't done as much prior to last year. It is one of my favorite lakes to fish because it's got a great depth to grass ratio around all sides, mostly. It makes jigging really fun when the specks are on. Most patches of grass will be on 8-10 feet. I'll nose in a bit with the trolling motor and dip a jig for 10 or 15 minutes and see if anyone's home. If not, move on to the next little patch.
Things worth noting is that the water is incredibly clear on Hernando Lake. So I've found the best bite is to be had first thing in the morning. Gotta be that early bird. Bite seems to slack off during the rest of the day until later in the afternoons. I've honestly used all colors of jigs in there - plastics, hair jigs, it doesn't much matter with as clear as it is. They'll bite it if they're hungry. You will have absolutely no problem catching bass, either. They love jigs out there.
Since you're on the water you don't have to bother with the boat ramp so much there at the Hwy 41 and 200 fork. During the week it's not terrible, but weekends are my least favorite. Tons of airboats and people really take their time getting in and out. There are connected lakes to Hernando Lake, Todd & Dodd. I haven't spent too much time back in there aside from bluegill fishing, but I've heard plenty of stories of folks catching specks out there.

Thanks for all the information. I hope this hurricane doesn’t do a lot of damage to the area. We are praying for all those in florida that are being impacted.

Hernando is now one of the few West/Central lakes that have a ramp fee. Haven't fished it in many moons(used to do good) = St. John's river(lakes) advocate...:twocents I like the tannic-stained H2O:check

Agree!
Have not fished Hernando since the the boat launch fees, Circus county is a joke! When I go it is usually the ramp off of Eden drive and use the Barge canal launch for salt water. All the fees we have paid for years for lic., extra tax for bullets, bait etc etc and the POOR CONDITION of the other launches is ridiculus. As bad as NY state is I enjoy fishing there so much more summers than I do here in FloriDA!
