I havent used a plate, but I used 2 drift socks one out each side on back cleat of boat when using the big motor to pull cranks… Worked perfect to get me to 1.5 on speed at idle. I could give more throttle to speed up.
Long ago I used a trolling plate on a 115 4 stroke to pull cranks. It worked good for me.
If you are talking about the one that mounts on your motor just above the prop, we had great success using it on my buddys 115 4 stroke merc. It would allow us to pull cranks all day if we chose running us at 2.0 mph.. before we put it on we could only run the trolling motor about 2 to 3 hours at best.
