Hey, that ain't a crappie
Me and Jeff headed down to Calhoun County yesterday to try another new lake, this time Prairie Lake which is south east of Olivet. We had some storms move through the area overnight dumping a lot of rain so we weren't sure what kind of mood the fish would be in. As usual when we attack a new lake we were long lining 1/16th and 1/32nd oz jigs. I've started using Leland lures Crappie Magnet plastics, mainly because they're tough as nails but they also put fish in the boat. Jeff was using Charlie Brewer Sliders.
The crappie were a little sluggish but we managed to get a few to bite. We landed around 20, all being decent fish in the 9"-11" range and lost quite a few at the boat. Most of the ones we landed were barely hooked, proving they weren't real aggressive.
The highlight of my day was when a big northern took my jig. I have to say, fighting a pike on a 12' crappie rod is a lot of fun and after he made a couple of line stripping runs Jeff was able to get the net under him. He measured just under 32" and got invited to my house for dinner, with him being the guest of honor. Attachment 405918
