I troll for them in the summer.
And if I know the area well I will troll at night. I have done pretty fare slow trolling both day time and at night. Using Jigs and minnows. 6 rods two baits. One jig, one minnow.

I also spider rig troll all summer long at night under lights for crappie and have some great success this way. Only way to get away from all the pleasure boaters and the heat this time of year.

I trolled the other weekend. So many jet skis and pleasure boaters that it was tough to fish. Still caught a few though.
I troll all year around

I generally wont fish during the summer months because it's just too hot for me and the fish seem sluggish about biting. That said....when that itch needs scratching then I go fishing and long lining is all I do. It is effective if you find biting fish and can get your baits down to 'em.
Longlining at night could and would be very tricky. IMO, it's hard enough during the daytime running the trolling motor and watching all your rods. Now, throw in the fact of having to run a spotlight to make sure youre going where you want to and not hitting anything or running aground?!? I believe you'd be asking for more than you wanted. Besides, dont the crappie spread out & move shallower in the water column chasing the shad by moonlite at nite anyway?!?
