The Nucanoes are great kayaks. Pro's the 12' Frontier is a work horse, it is big and stable. Con's big and stable also translates into heavy and not that fast when paddling. However this should make a good kayak for taking your son along and a great fishing platform with or without a trolling motor. I fished out of a classic for a couple of years and it was a great kayak, I have paddled the Pursuits and the Frontiers some and they are great platforms. The Frontier should work out good for you. If you are not too big the 10' Frontier might be an option. Good luck.
One thing to add is you can buy an aftermarket pedal drive for the Frontier.
I had a NC F12 for 2 years, and recently sold it and went to a jon. Everything flintcreek said is true. Big, wide, heavy, stable, slow - the aircraft carrier of kayaks. I ran a 46 lb trolling motor on mine on lakes, and it did well fishing the Chattahoochee, Flint, and Etowah rivers here in GA.
Getting old with sore elbows (RA) was making it tough to load and unload the kayak and all the gear at the lake. I thought about getting a kayak trailer, but then a buddy offered to let me use an old jon boat he had gathering dust in the garage, so I jumped on it. I'll miss the kayak, especially for for rivers, but I'm enjoying the ease of launch and recovery, and all the extra room in the jon.
