I could never trust a rope ... (OCD I guess) ...
I push off manually and troll the boat back to the bank or the dock ...

I have rescued an unmanned boat when a rope broke and left a very irritated launcher at the ramp with a frayed rope end
Rickie
From 2001-2004 was below Pickwick Dam 5 days a week....only ice and snow kept me home. I lost count of how many times I would take someone down river to get their boat due to the rope breaking. I am sure most of the ropes were probably rotten but those memories stuck with me when I got back into boating in 2015. Just can’t bring myself to do it.

I use a Dakota boat retriever now, love it, and highly recommend it to anyone who frequently launches their boat alone.
Prior to the Dakota boat retriever, I used a rope 12 feet longer than the boat trailer or 30 feet.
25 ft. never had a problem . Use nylon 3/4 size .1754 war eagle . improved cinch not to loop over the post .
at least a 25 foot rope for me when i did the diy launching .
Same here 25ft. My trailer is setup so I can not launch with the boat unhooked. The rope is used to throw a couple of wraps around the winch post, loosen the winch and unhook, slack off the boat allowing it to slowly unload. The extra length is so it will clear the trailer and let me walk up the ramp a bit before stepping to dock walk to tie up. Once in the boat making way I stow the rope till next launch.
25 ft. ¾ braid. Been doing it 40 years. No problems. Ropes require maintenance just like the other gear.
