What is the difference between "spider rigging" and "pushing".
Sounds like both techniques use multiple long rods off the front of the boat with rod holders.
All my fishing experience has just been single pole casting or jigging.

To me they are the same just as pulling and long lining are the same. There are nuances in every technique that sometimes makes a difference just figure yours out and get to fishing.
Spider-rigging to me is poles over the front and sides moving very slow are not at all, tightline and or bobbers.
Pushing to me is moving a little faster with heavier weights covering a lot of water.
Yeah, pretty much how I distinguish between the two. And I also distinguish between Pulling & Longline Trolling with Pulling using added weights & Longline Trolling using just baits alone. Some even say Pulling is with cranks & Longline Trolling is with jigs.Quote:

Seems like semantics to me. Hard to figure at what point one ceases to spider rig and begins to push. We just call it all trolling. People I fish with do differentiate between pushing and pulling. Longlining seems to be in a class by itself. We generally push minnows or jigs, pull cranks, or long line jigs.

Spider rigging is when you use multiple poles at the same time. You can spider rig and push or you can spider rig and pull. Pushing you use a heavy weight to get the jigs almost straight down. Pulling, or long lining, you are not using added weight, the length of the line and speed are the primary factors in the depth of your jigs or minnows. You can use the same technique with jigs, minnows, or crank baits , although the weight used or line length will differ.
For me Speed and weight.
Under .3mph I’m usually in brush and trying to focus on fish in the brush. I think I’m spider rigging
Over .3mph I like to be in open water with drop offs as opposed to brush piles. For this I consider to be pushing.
Faster I go the more weight needed to keep line straight
