Portion of Kentucky Lake closed to boaters for research

Ran across this article this morning and it was posted on January 11 - don't know the facts behind the article:

EDDYVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Officials say a portion of Pisgah Bay on Kentucky Lake will be closed to boaters for scientific research. A statement from the U.S. Geological Survey says scientists from the agency will be researching ways to improve mass removal techniques for silver carp, an invasive fish. The statement says scientists plan to capture, tag, and track silver carp during herding efforts to determine their response and movements. The southeast area of Pisgah Bay near Pisgah Point Boat Ramp will be off-limits to boat passage and the Birmingham Ferry Boat Ramp will be closed Monday through Jan. 27.

I believe they've been working on it since 2007. It has taken a very long time for public interest to become strong enough to force the government's hand to provide funding for the research that has happened in recent years. KDFWR has been very pro-active in their efforts in addressing the Asian Carp issue, I believe they would have done this type of work in 2007 if the money had been available then. Lack of money/funding has always been the problem in the fight against Asian Carp, not KDFWR.

FYI - There are actually five (5) sites where this modified unified method (MUM) effort is to be conducted. All 5 sites have a 300 ft x 500 ft "harvest area" in which all brushpiles/stakebeds/etc. were removed in order to have a clean bottom for the harvest. Supposedly anything removed was placed back on the bottom nearby in the same bay. The removal efforts started back in December.

Pisgah, Sledd, Ledbetter, Smith, and Vickers are the five (5) locations for the MUM this year. Maps showing the location of the 300x500 harvest areas can be found on this page about halfway down under the section "December 2020 – Update":
