winter crappie
Ok, let's say that your in the winter (surface water temp around 40 - 45), in about 20 - 25 feet of water and the crappie are suspended around 18 - 23 feet of water. How do you work your jigs? Do you move your jig much? Cast and retrieve? or does it more depend on whatever they like that day?
Because all iv been doing is dropping my jig down with some scent on it with not much movement, and this gets bites but not as much as I thought I would consitering the amount of crappie beneath me. Is that just winter or should I be varying my jig speeds/jig movement/ ect.
Thanks everyone and hpapy new year!

My suggestion would be less movement the better, just like you're doing. You're in a boat, it's moving enough. And hopefully the scent you're using is Slabsauce, cause if it ain't, try it, should help.

I try to hold my jig still just above the crappie. If that don't work I will ease it slowly down to catch a reaction bite. If that fails I will cast beyond the fish and count down and reel through the fish. If this don't work change lure and repeat.

That is almost exactly the situation for me yesterday, and most of my strikes, maybe 65% came while the jig was slowly falling on a cocked bail while the rod tip was high, 7-8 ft above the water.

Keep changing colors until you find the one they’ll hit best.can’t stress that enough some days. If they’re down there, something will get their attention sooner or later. Try using a smaller size head too.

I cast and retrieve 100% of the time. When it's really cold, you need to slow down your retrieve.
Take a look at your reel. Avoid the super fast gear ratios. 5:1 or lower is better for winter.

Wow, some really great replies already, you would think we've done this before.

Sometimes I will hang the jig below a slip bobber just above the fish depth. When it sinks and the bobber stands up just pull it enough for the bobber to lay over then let it stand back up again.
