Hello my friends, it's been a bit.
Been at Hillsdale this week fishing shallow brush in 10 to 12 ft of water. Lots of fish and good size. Junebug and chart and minnows have been solid.
Hope all is well.

Hey Kansasoutdoorsman,
New to Kansas and just got into crappie fishing in the spring, Hillsdale, Perry, and Clinton are my go to lakes so far. What rigs are yall using to get into them deeper? Dropshot like your bass fishing?? Jigging? Or are there better ways to fish it like a moving bait. Been catching the mess out of them when they're shallow but different story when they move deep. Thanks in advance!

Crappie are rarely deeper than 15 foot. Not much oxygen below the thermocline which is generally at 15-18 ft. In the heat of summer, I'll often fish along old river, or creek beds, in 25-30 ft of water. However, I'll be catching fish at 8-12 feet deep depending on the time of day and how cloudy it is. Less light shallower crappie. Sometimes, in the summer, you can locate a bend in the creek channel. In that case, I will try the shallower water in the bend of the channel. I've done well on 95-100 degree days fishing in 8 ft of water. The other summer tactic I use is to locate schools of shad in deep open water. I cast my jig into the school and let it sink down through the shad. You will catch a variety of fish this way. Not unusual to catch bass and white bass along with crappie
Thanks for the insight whatroads. That makes alot of sense. I wouldnt have thought about the light having anything to do with it. Hoping to get out on Hillsdale this weekend at some point.
