Cracker bed scouting, then crappie May 01, 2020
I did some scouting for shellcracker beds this morning, but the area that I wanted to check needed a couple more feet of water. On the way to my next area, I stopped to check out an America Tree that we put out a few years ago and it showed some crappie in it, so I decided to fish for a while before resuming cracker scouting,
I already had 3 rods rigged with 1/48 oz jigs with Bobby Garland Itty Bitty slab slayers on them and although the fish trees were in 14 feet of water, I decided to fish with the ultralight rod with 2 lb test line. I positioned the boat about 6 feet away from the trees and made a 15 foot cast and counted down to fourteen before barely creeping the jig along. The wind was blowing pretty hard into my face, so it was a challenge. I had a blast. The crappie wanted those little bitty baits and I kept feeding it to them.
I landed 7 keepers, one spotted bass, and had my 2 lb line broken off with a crappie. About 8-10 short fish kept me entertained with action in between the keeper bites. Wolftever creek looked like Grand Central Station with one boat after another running in and out of the creek. This is why I rarely fish this creek although it is a great creek to fish.
I picked up Jay W as I as passing the bridge to go scout more and he was fishing from the bank, so I picked him up and we fished for a couple more hours. We caught more crappie, bluegills, spotted bass and a pretty Warmouth. Both of us had enough fish for dinner tonight. I’ll scout some another day. Grin.
Water temp was in low 60’s to mid 60’s when we quit fishing. My biggest crappie was 13” and had a couple more 12” plus. Fun on ultralight and 2 lb test line.
