Hmm, I like them both. Love the beautiful way some can lay the hackle down. It is a true art and skill to do it well. I think hackle is more durable and less messy to make a jig with. I think it’s easier to make a jig with marabou and has better action in the water.
Maribou does have some awesome action
As you probably already know they’re two different animals. They can both be easy to work with. The tip of the hackle feather is what gives most beginners fits, and some of us seasoned tyers (sp) still have a time with them sometimes. When I get aggravated with it, it’s not my night to tie. They are more durable to a point but they also have a different profile. The maribou has a more fluid action while the hackle tip is a bit more rigid but still moves some. Mixing the two can give some interesting results. Adding V’s to a hackle tip adds some bulk to the profile, as can some maribou tips. Time on the bench is the best teacher and some basic colors of each will answer a lot of questions for you like it did for me.
Nothing has action in the water like marabou and rabbit fur.
Absolutely true and I love both! However when the water is cold before the spawn, I am not sure Kiptail may do the trick since it will not have much movement. If they are chasing bait though Marabou and Rabbit is my game, but I do use Hackle a lot in summer and at night and as a minimal bait hard to beat!

Great question and I love the answers!!
Back when i was squirrel hunting (around my pecan trees) i looked at the Rooster tail company, Mepps?
Anyway the buy squirrel tails and they state that nothing has better action. I don't know. It does have very unique coloring.

It seems to me that often, its the shape/profile that matters most. And that being the case its hard to beat the Bobby Garland baby shad look.
I find it very difficult to copy that chunky body profile with hackle or marabou.
