I watched that documentary and was amazed back when at the toughness of those people and the ability they had to with stand extreme cold .
I most certainly am not near that tough in cold conditions and never have been . But none the less I often push myself in inclement weather conditions to see if I can get a bite . I give up more easily than I once did for sure , but still push it from time to time .
So Tuesday was rather chilly here at low 20 at first light and I thought I most certainly cant handle it that cold with a north wind at 15 to 20 mph but hey I might get frost bit . :Rofl
I asked the state park ranger about competition and she gave that you have lost your mind look and shook her head and said no sir no competition here today !
I said well you know they most certainly might be biting and she said yes that's true and down the trail I went .
Rolled up to an empty parking lot with more layers on than I could count and strolled out into the rather chilly wind . Dropped my jig down and said to myself it could happen …..
and bought got my pole ripped out of my hand and missed the fish as well ! :yikes
Then I got a bite a few feet from there about a few drops later and it pulled down significantly harder than the first and missed that one as well :banghead
By this time I was out in the weather about 15 minutes and my finger tips couldn't take it .I eased over to another location with more shelter from the arctic blasting me wind and found a small crappie . I then said ok bro me and me need to go get in front of the truck heater and go find us something a bit more sheltered or "we" aint gunna do much ketchn today .
Around the lake I went to a secondary location and the show began , got bit again and missed it as well ? I was like come on now brother lets get this party started and hooked one and lost it on top ….darnit I say . Well the good news is after the failure of a start I finally got in the groove and just whacked the fire plum out of them . I managed 53 and only a few were under the 10 inch legal mark and none were much over the 13 inch mark but boy howdy once I figured out exactly how to present it to them and got my hook set on I was in crappie slinging festival heaven .
The fish wanted it real close to the bottom with a very very slow drag towards the cover I suspected they were around . A straight drop would not get bit and nothing else I tried on them worked . A drag across the bottom about 6 inches from the bottom towards them got fire bit out of it . they were in around 15 foot of water and pale riders . The colors are fading out west but not the bite if you get dialed in I promise .
the blue and white handtie smoked the purple head one and I forgot to mention one bass was in the show as well
and yes I had to lose the ball cap as it didn't feel right on my head with all them layers on …..rotfl
stay tuned and have a great day
KABOOM is the word btw
