Let's talk about the hook/eye geometry, aka "why the excessive neck" question..

I would prefer if the line tie eye on jig heads was flush with the head, giving the hook point more offset, more exposure, but no jigs are produced this way, as it seems the US jig hook "standards" (i.e. industry practice) are a compromise - one hook for all weight jigs. Based on all the cast jigs I've bought from many different makers, ebay and elsewhere, the eye is often sitting up proud of the jig head by a good 1/16", or more. I do bend my hook point out slightly to compensate, but it bothers me, since my favorite jigs are not like this (JDM Daiwa). Does this bother anyone else? I'll get a pic tomorrow, but you know what I mean, I hope.

Get you some size 4 caddis/pupa hooks and some barbell eyes. I tie some jigs with these items because I have more of the hook exposed to the fish. You can also buy some jig hooks that have a 60 degree bend instead of the more typicall 90 degree bend.

That is one reason I like Sickle hooks, the gap between the hook point and the shank is larger on Sickle hooks. So a #4 Sickle has the same bite as a #2 Regular bend hook.

This is going to be a good one, I never thought about it, that way.

I don't like the eyelet right on the lead. If you powder paint your own you get it on the eye you have to clean it and it cracks around the eye of the hook. And I really don't think you can say US Standard as most of the jig hooks are made in Korea and Japan and china so the US market gets what they sell. You said you bend the hook opening out for a better bite so you took care of it or as you also said you buy the JDM heads.

Same here,same problem..My Solution was to go with Do its Bat jig mold..Solves the Problem....The best Brushpile jighead ever made my Two Pennies..We just use regular jig hooks ,heat and bend to fit mold.....DO IT,BATJIG MOLD....YOUR WELCOME..

@Fatman: I don't use JDM heads for trolling or dock shooting where typically I lose a lot of jigs. This has been fixed mostly by using Litewirehook jigs from a CDC member, which will almost always bend out before the line breaks. The "excessively proud eye" problem is mostly with the 1/32 oz jig heads. I'm working with a machinist friend on a tool to fix the issue.

The JDM heads (Daiwa gekkabijin) hook fish better than anything I have ever used, but they are a buck apiece. I still have about a hundred of them, in spite of the price - they are the BEST. RGTFM showed in one of his youtube vids how to tie on a piece of stiff mono as a weed guard, so I modded a few jigs this way. So far, I like them a lot.
