They work great. Put a couple out a day or two before your fishing trip. You can not leave them too long or the holes in the metal start filling in with plankton, etc. and then the minnows can figure out where the exit is (smile).

I got one last week. We put some dried cat food in a mesh sack. Hung out of the dock at different depths over a few days... Nothing, one minnow. We even have big led lights sitting off the bottom... Still nothing. Think our minnows are really skinny and just seeing right through the 1/4 mesh wire sides.
Going to try one of the folding traps with smaller mesh and more entry holes.
I see a ton of bait fish at the light... Just not in the trap.

I've had the same problem. I use a green underwater light at night, see minnows swimming in the light every night. I have tried a couple of different styles of minnow traps, tried different baits and methods of suspending the bait in the trap and the trap in the water. But I still haven't managed to catch any minnows in my traps.
That was my experience the last time I tried minnow traps. Couldn't even get a single minnow.
Beleive it or not, try onions. Growing up we just put bread in the traps. Later someone suggested trying onions. Proved far better than bread in our local livestock ponds.
Get you a 1/4"mesh cast net 4 or 5' and learn to cast it. Plenty of YouTube videos to learn with. Faster catching and will catch a lot more also.:twocents
Used a cast net for years to get live bait for my wife. Can no longer throw one. I prefer jigs but sometimes crappie prefer minnows. :)
