It's a start

So me & a bud have a hunting lease off SR46, we have had a hog problem the last 2 years & it seems worse this year,
not quite as bad as Ketchn:yikes.
We really only bow hunt it as that is what the land owner has requested & it is very thick woods, no open fields at all.
Since they move at night mostly and shooting them 1 by 1 can take a while we asked if we could put a trap out.
The landowner agreed and said to remove as many as you want. My old trap had fallen apart & was beyond repair, so I bought a new one and set it up. At first, we left doors propped open & let them go in and out for a few days. Then with a special homemade
corn mix attractant, we set the trap & BAM the next morning 4 little piggies got caught. We have a lot more to catch and
I'm sure some will nearly be impossible to trap & will have to be hunted but it's a start to try to end the nuisance.
These should be tasty and all were sows so I look forward to eating them as well.

we are going to start trapping soon at my place I think .
they are to smart and in large numbers to have any impact hunting them it seems

I let the trap sit for a week but according to the camera they were back in it the next day even after taking out those 4.
I left the door propped open & feed it up so they would get comfortable again, hopefully we catch some bigger ones this
time. I'm gonna try the special homemade corn mix again, I'll let you know how it works & you may want to try it.

Looks like the start to some good eating

I was once told that a pig caught in a trap releases adrenaline (or something like that) and it ruins the meat. Is there any truth to that? Well done, by the way!

Not to my Knowledge on ruining the meat, I've caught a bunch of hogs in traps and ate the majority of them. They are as good as the ones I've shot hunting. Now the big boars can be rank sometimes.

I know a pig that gets out of a trap is almost never going in one again and will likely try to train its friends not to as well .
as far as how they taste if trapped and consumed I see no difference between those and the shot outside the trap variety myself .

Which trap did you buy? Tractor supply?

Before you spend a bunch of money on a manufactured name brand trap. Look up the figure 6 trap. 4 bull wire panels about 20 Tee post some tie wire and a little work you will have a nice trap. Look up videos on you tube. Easy to build and you leave the door open let them get used up going in and eating for a week or so then shut the door. They can get in but can't get out, the best thing is its not a trip style door. We have caught 19 in one of ours at 1 time

I have never noticed a difference in a trapped pig vs. a shot pig but yes the big boars can be pretty bad either way !!

True, once caught hard to catch again but with this corn mix I have been lucky to even catch a very weary boar after a few days of baiting.

I bought it off someone on craigslist, my old homemade one rotted from age. It appears to be like the one that tractor supply sells though.
I used to use a fence panel style & they work well but wanted something more portable to use on this lease. If it was my property I would
build a permanent large corral style trap.

We had a storm (hurricane) coming almost 2 months ago, luckily it did not hit.
However I moved the trap out into the open so it didn't get crushed by any falling
trees. Between moving it & the weather changes the pigs have been here & there
but definitely still around. They seemed very weary of going near it after moving back
into original location. Finally got some to go in yesterday & well a cookout will be in
order real soon.

Good eating size

Nice! Nothing better than some wild hogs. Get the tenderloins out grill or fry. Maybe smoke a ham. Then grind the rest with some added ribeye steak fat trimmings from the local butcher, pepper and extra sage, makes some mighty fine sausage.

Another 1 down, still got plenty to take out
but keep adding meat to the freezer and have
mostly been sows.

I've tried a bunch of different kind of attraction additive for bait from the the bags you can buy in stores to homemade versions such as jello, molasses, honey, sour corn, leftover citrus and they all work and smell good in the woods but it's still the main ingredient corn that keeps them coming back night after night.
